Amber Karnes is a yogi, yoga teacher, and lifelong student of the body. She is a 200-hour registered Hatha Yoga teacher and received her training from the wonderful and wise Anna Pittman of The Breathing Space in 2011. For Amber, Yoga has been an integral part of a decade-long journey toward self-acceptance and body positivity – a journey of making peace with her body and helping others to do the same. She teaches weekly Yoga classes in Charlottesville, Virginia, where students of all shapes and sizes will find tips, tricks, and modifications to make Yoga work for their unique bodies, instead of being squished into poses for the sake of form over function. Amber emphasizes safe alignment and mindful transitions in her classes, and gives each student permission to honor the body they bring to the mat today, while being empowered to learn about the body’s intelligence and power.
Amber practices a Health At Every Size approach to wellness, and blogs about Yoga and body image at Body Positive Yoga. She is co-creating Yoga Without Exception, a resource for yogis in larger bodies, which will launch in early 2015. When she’s not on the mat, you can usually find her hiking in the Virginia mountains with her husband Jimmy and their grumpy old Boston terrier, Kyla.
